LOS LLANOS (EASTERN PLAINS)

NOTE: This tour can be run in conjunction with the PACIFIC COAST, CENTRAL AND WESTERN CORDILLERAS tour.

Day 1: Arrive in Bogota.

Day 2: Today we shall head to Monterredondo to look for the very local and endemic Cundinamarca Antpitta. We also have a very good chance of seeing the endemic Flame-winged Parakeet here. Other species we may encounter include Golden fronted Whitestart, Sulphur-bellied Tyrannulet, Barred Fruiteater, Northern Mountain Cacique, Black-billed Mountain Toucan and Black collared Jay. In the nearby town we will look for the localized Green-bellied Hummingbird. Later we shall head to Villavicencio for one night.

Day 3: In the morning we shall visit the Bavaria Forest above Villavicencio. where it is possible to see Lettered Aracari, Blue fronted Lancebill, Fork-tailed Woodnymph, White-chinned Sapphire, Glittering-throated Emerald, Green-tailed Jacamar, White-chested Puffbird, Gilded Barbet, Black-faced Antbird, Spot-winged Antbird, Green Manakin, Silver-beaked Tanager, Paradise Tanager, White-vented Euphonia and Pectoral Sparrow. In the afternoon we will drive to Yopal for one night.

Day 4: We will go early in the morning to Hato La Aurora. On the journey we shall look out for species such as Horned Screemer, Jabiru, Sharp-tailed, Green and Scarlet Ibis, Roseate Spoonbill and Burrowing Owl as well as Caiman and Capybara. Night in Hato La Aurora.

Day 5 - 6: During our stay at Hato La Aurora we shall search out the many waterbirds and spend time in the gallery forest. Some of the many species we hope to see here include Orinoco Goose, Brazilian Teal, White-faced Whistling Duck, Double-striped Thick-knee, Buff-necked Ibis, Roseate Spoonbill, Maguari Stork, Hoatzin, Fasciated Antshrike, Pale-headed Jacamar, Yellow-knobbed Curassow, Sunbittern, Scarlet Macaw, Red-bellied Macaw, Blue-crowned Parakeet, Great Horned Owl, Nacunda Nighthhawk, American Pygmy Kingfisher, Chestnut-capped and Collarded Puffbird, Yellow-bellied Nunbird, Chestnut-eared Aracari, Little Woodpecker, Rufous-fronted Thornbird, Violeaceus Jay, Bare-eyed Thrush, Hooded Tanager, Flame-crested Tanager, Yellowish Pipit and Grassland Sparrow.

Day 7: We shall head back to Yopal to catch a flight to Bogota. Night in Bogota.

Day 8: At dawn we shall find ourselves overlooking the vast city of Bogotá. Here we shall look for the endemics, Matorral Tapaculo and Silvery-throated Spinetail as well as the near endemics, Rufous-browed Conebill and Coppery-bellied Puffleg. Other species could include Tawny-rumped Tyrannulet, Agile Tit Tyrant, Pluchcap, Black-eared, Black-headed, Black-capped and Superciliaried Hemispingus and maybe the rare and local Black-chested Mountain Tanager.
