Bosque Yotoco
Introduction
Bosque Yotoco is one of the last remaining forested areas of its type on the east slope of the Western Cordillera. It is particularly important because it protects populations of Cauca Guan, Turquoise Dacnis-tanager and Multicoloured Tanager. The reserve is own by the National University in Bogotá and managed by wardens from the Corporación Autonoma Regional del Valle del Cauca (CVC). Permission is required to visit the reserve and can be obtained from CVC in Buga Efrén Salcedo Pérez, Cra 15 #5-4A, Buga. Telephone 222 78347 or fax on 222 86172.
Getting to the Reserve
To reach the reserve take and bus from Cali to Darién or the Lago Calima and get off at the reserve headquarters. Camping facilities are available here. You MUST organise your permit before you go, though if you phone CVC in advance they will send it to the reserve for you, saving you a trip to Buga.
Birds to look for
Clearly the two species everyone looks for here are Cauca Guan and Turquoise Dacnis-tanager. Other species to look for include Multicoloured Tanager, if you haven't already been to El 18, Colombian Chachalaca, Golden-headed and Crested Quetzals, Yellow-headed Manakin, White-ruffed and Striped Manakins, Chestnut-crowned Gnateater, Golden-crowned Warbler and Guira Tanager.
