Pueblo Nuevo
Introduction
Pueblo Nuevo is a small
village situated six hours walk through excellent forest from the main Tumaco
- Pasto highway. There is no official accommodation and what there is, is
very basic and not for the faint hearted or those who have any kind of phobia
of creepy crawlies. However, another alternative is to visit the area for
the day and just walk half way to the village, reaching a small stream that
crosses the path, and then returning to the road.
Getting there
The only real way of
visiting the village is by asking for a guide at the Río Ñambi NR or in the
nearby village of Altaquer. The entrance to the walk is not sign posted and
is very obscure so finding it yourself is impossible. The entrance starts
in a place called La María, but even this isn't marked and bus drivers might
not know it.
Birds to look for
Should you decide to visit the area then you will be rewarded with a spectacular
array of species. The area is especially easy for Five-coloured Barbet. Other
possibilities include Scarlet-browed, Lemon-browed, Blue-whiskered and Scarlet-and-white
Tanagers, Buff-throated Saltator, Red-rumped Woodpecker, Choco and Chestnut-mandibled
Toucans, Stripe-billed Araçari, Chestnut-headed Oropendola, Purple Honeycreeper,
Cinnamon Woodpecker, Purple-crowned Fairy, Chestnut-backed, Bicoloured, Occelated
and Spotted Antbirds, Spot-crowned Antvireo and maybe the rare Yellow-green
Bush-tanager.
