Tumaco area
Introduction
Tumaco is the second
largest port on the Pacific coast and fishing is an important part of the
of the town's existence. It is nothing special but Tumaco is a popular tourist
destination from Pasto, though most stay on the nearby islands of El Morro
or BocaGrande.
Getting to Tumaco
Here there are two options;
by plane from Cali or a bus from either Pasto or Ipiales. There is one flight
daily from Cali with both Avianca and Intercontinental. There are several
buses daily from Pasto but fewer from Ipiales.
Birding in Tumaco
Unless you can arrange
boat transport to take you through the mangroves, the birding is limited.
However, you may end up here especially is you've arrived by plane. On the
island of Tumaco look in the area behind the Social Security Building. Here
look for Black-cheeked Woodpecker, Chestnut-throated Seedeater, Gold-billed
Ground-dove and Great-tailed Grackle. On the nearby island of El Morro look
for Red-legged Honeycreeper, Fulvous-vented Euphonia, Black-cheeked Woodpecker,
Grey-breasted Martin and Gold-billed Ground-dove, Magnificent Frigatebird
and Brown Pelican. Also possible is Rufous-necked Wood-rail.
