La Boquilla
Introduction
La Boquilla is a small fishing village about 7 kilometres north of Cartagena. It is nothing special but is ideal as an introduction to Caribbean birding. It is best to go on Sunday when the locals are there. This makes transport to and from the village easier to find and you are less likely to encounter problems. Getting a boat to go through the mangroves is also easier to organise.
Getting there
There are probably regular buses from Cartagena, but the easiest way is to take a taxi up and any form of transport back.
Birds to see
September through to April is the best time because of the influx of North American waders. Look out for Wilson's Plover, Red Knot, Wilson's Phalarope, Collared Plover, Least and Semipalmated Sandpipers, Solitary Sandpiper and Semipalmated Plover. Black, Least, Gull-billed and Large-billed Terns are regular. Also look for Grey Kingbird, Lesser Kiskadee, Cattle Tyrant, Brown-throated Parakeet, Louisiana and Little Blue Herons, Reddish Egret and Ringed Kingfisher.
